The Cost of Driving from Ajax, Ontario to Windsor, Ontario based on Current Gas Prices

Driving from Ajax to Windsor can either be a fun adventure or an exhausting one, depending on what route you take. As someone who has driven the route numerous times, I thought it would be helpful to share my insights on the different routes, the distances, the time it takes, and the costs associated with them.

Route 1: Highway 401

The most popular route for drivers is taking Highway 401, which is approximately 372 kilometers and takes approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. This route is convenient for those who don't want to worry about additional toll fees. The estimated cost of gas for this route is around $61.60 based on current gas prices in Ontario.

Route 2: Highway 407 & Highway 403

If you're a frequent driver of the 407, you already know that it provides less traffic and more grade separations than the 401. Taking the 407 followed by the 403 is another popular route, which is approximately 382 kilometers and takes approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes to complete. The cost of tolls for the 407 alone is estimated at around $51.80, with the additional cost of gas for this route estimated at around $58.50. If you have a transponder, or you are a regular 407 user, you can shave off a good chunk of change from these estimates.

Route 3: The Scenic Route

If you're looking to take in some scenic views and go off the beaten path, this route may be for you. Take the back roads following Highway 2 along Lake Ontario, then merge onto the 403 towards Windsor. It's approximately 475 kilometers and takes approximately 6 hours to complete, but you'll be able to see some of Ontario's most beautiful countryside. The estimated cost of gas for this route is around $77.50.

Route 4: The Straight Shot Route

For those looking to avoid tolls and who prefer shorter routes, there is a straight-shot route that goes through the U.S. Take the QEW, then follow it to the Rainbow Bridge. The bridge charges a toll, but it'll take you straight to the U.S. border. From Buffalo, take the Interstate 90 West to the 219S, which will eventually take you across the Peace Bridge. Once across the border, follow the Queen Elizabeth Way towards Hamilton, then merge onto the 403 towards Windsor. This route is approximately 438 kilometers and takes approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes to complete, and the estimated tolls and gas cost around $90.30.

In conclusion, taking the scenic route or the straight-shot route may take more time and incur more expenses, but it may be worth it to some drivers for the wonderful sights or to avoid the heavier traffic on the 401. Regardless of which route you take, the estimated cost of gas is based on current gas prices in Ontario and is subject to change. Drive safe and keep in mind that the cost of your driving experience may vary depending on factors beyond your control.
