The Connecticut Drive: Exploring Canaan and Bristol

Are you planning a road trip through Connecticut and wondering how much time it will take to get from Canaan to Bristol? Well, there are a few options available to you, each one offering unique landscapes and attractions along the way. Here, we’ll break down the different routes, distances, and drive times so you can plan your perfect road trip.

Route 1 – The Scenic Route

Distance: 36 miles Drive Time: 1 hour

If you’re in the mood for picturesque views and winding roads, Route 1 is the route for you. You’ll start by following Route 7 South through the rolling hills and farmland of Litchfield County. As you approach the town of New Milford, you’ll turn onto Route 202 East, which will take you through the charming little towns of Bantam and Litchfield. From there, take Route 4 East until you reach Bristol.

Along the way, we highly recommend stopping in Litchfield, one of the state’s most picturesque towns. Grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat at one of the town’s many cafes or restaurants, or take a stroll around the historic Green.

Route 2 – The Interstate Route

Distance: 43 miles Drive Time: 45 minutes

If you’re in more of a hurry, Route 2 is your best bet. You’ll take Route 44 East out of Canaan and merge onto I-84 East toward Hartford. Stay on I-84 for about 22 miles until you reach Exit 31, which will take you onto Route 229 South towards Bristol.

While this route may be quicker, there aren’t as many stops along the way. However, if you’re looking for a rest stop, make a pit stop at the Farmington River Rest Area to stretch your legs and take in the scenery.

Route 3 – The Rural Route

Distance: 34 miles Drive Time: 1 hour

For those who want to take the road less traveled, Route 3 is the way to go. You’ll start by taking Route 7 South out of Canaan until you reach Route 4 East. From there, follow Route 4 East through the quiet countryside until you reach Bristol.

Along the way, we suggest stopping in the small town of Cornwall Bridge. There, you can explore the picturesque Covered Bridge, which dates back to 1864.

Route 4 – The Northern Route

Distance: 39 miles Drive Time: 1 hour

If you’re looking for a scenic drive through the northern part of the state, Route 4 is a great option. You’ll start by taking Route 7 South until you reach Route 4 West. From there, you’ll drive through the Housatonic River Valley and the towns of Sharon and Salisbury before reaching Bristol.

An excellent place to stop along this route is Kent, a charming small town filled with unique shops and galleries. We highly recommend grabbing a sandwich at the popular Fife 'n Drum restaurant.

No matter which route you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the beauty and charm of Connecticut. With so many great places to stop along the way, your road trip from Canaan to Bristol is sure to be memorable. Safe travels!
