The Best Ways to Get from Burlington to Hartford, Vermont
If you're traveling in Vermont, it's likely you'll be passing through these two destinations. Burlington, the largest city in Vermont, is known for its bohemian charm and picturesque lakefront. Hartford, on the other hand, is tucked away in the hills and is the perfect base for exploring the state's rural beauty. Here are the best ways to get from Burlington to Hartford, and some worthwhile stops along the way.
Option 1: I-89S, 85 miles, 1.5 hours
The quickest way to get from Burlington to Hartford is a straight-shot down I-89 South. You'll see some lovely sights along the way, like the Winooski River and the hills of central Vermont. However, it doesn't offer many opportunities for scenic stops. Your best bet for a pit stop is the small town of Randolph, just off exit 4. Here you'll find locally owned shops, restaurants, and scenic views of the White River.
Option 2: US-7S and VT-100S, 100 miles, 2.5 hours
If you're looking for a more scenic route, take US-7 South and cut over to VT-100 South. You'll travel through some of Vermont's most charming towns, like Shelburne and Middlebury, as well as some of the state's most picturesque countryside. Along the way, I highly recommend stopping at the famously delicious Red Hen Baking Company in Middlesex for a fresh loaf of bread or pastry. A little further south along Route 100, take a short detour to the Warren Covered Bridge, one of Vermont's most photographed locations.
Option 3: I-89S with scenic detours, 94 miles, 2 hours
This option is for those who want to pack in as much scenery as possible. You'll take I-89 South as before, but this time, you'll take two scenic detours: one off exit 10 to visit the quaint village of Waterbury, where you can tour the Ben & Jerry's factory or sample some beer at the nearby Alchemist Brewery. Another detour is off exit 4 to drive along the very best stretch of Vermont's Route 100, one of the state's most beautiful byways. The winding road takes you past several picturesque towns, including charming Weston with its store containing a hands-on exhibit of more than 5,000 toys and games.
No matter which route you choose, the drive from Burlington to Hartford is a Vermont classic. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and don't forget to pick up some maple syrup along the way. Safe travels!
