The Most Direct Route: 578 km, 6.5 hours

The quickest route from Bristol to Enschede is to take the M5 and M6 to the ferry port at Harwich. From there, take the ferry to the Hook of Holland and drive northeast via the A12 and A1. This journey covers a distance of 578 kilometers and takes about 6.5 hours, without factoring in time for the ferry crossing.

If you're in a hurry, this is the best option for you. However, we highly recommend making a few stops along the way! The ferry crossing is a great chance to relax and enjoy some scenery. On the Dutch side of the journey, we recommend stopping in Amsterdam for some delicious Dutch cuisine and a stroll along the canals.

The Scenic Route: 763 km, 8 hours

If you have a bit more time to spare, consider taking the scenic route. This journey takes you north out of Bristol on the M5 before turning east onto the A50 towards Derbyshire. From there, follow the A515 and A50 to Stoke-on-Trent before heading north on the M6.

From the M6, take the A50 and A57 east towards Sheffield before turning north again towards Leeds on the A61. Finally, head northeast on the A1(M) towards Durham before turning east on the A66 towards the coast. This route covers a distance of 763 kilometers and takes about 8 hours.

Along the way, there are countless places to stop and explore. Make a detour to the Peak District National Park for a hike and stunning views, or stop in Sheffield to visit the Kelham Island Museum. If you have an interest in history, Durham Cathedral is a must-visit on the way.

The Charming Route: 632 km, 7 hours

Our final recommendation is a route that takes you through some of the UK's most picturesque towns and villages. From Bristol, head north on the M5 before turning east on the A38. Follow the A38 until it meets the A50, which will take you northeast towards the lovely market town of Ashbourne.

From there, follow the A515 north towards Buxton and the Peak District before turning east on the A628 towards South Yorkshire. Finally, head north on the A616 towards Stocksbridge before turning east on the A628 towards Leeds.

This journey covers a distance of 632 kilometers and takes about 7 hours. Along the way, make sure to stop in Ashbourne for tea and scones, explore the spa town of Buxton, and visit the beautiful Hardwick Hall.
