This route takes about 1.5 hours, but the scenery is well worth the extra time.

Make sure to take a break and stretch your legs in historic New Castle, Delaware, a charming town with cobblestoned streets and beautifully preserved homes from the colonial era.

If you want to spend more time enjoying the great outdoors, consider this scenic drive through Delaware's countryside. Take NJ-49 East through Port Elizabeth and continue onto DE-6 East. Follow signs to DE-15 South, which will take you through the small town of Felton and past lush fields and farmland. Turn onto DE-42 East, then merge onto DE-1 South to reach Dover. This drive takes about 2 hours, but it's a great chance to explore some of Delaware's under-the-radar scenery.

Stop in the charming town of Harrington, Delaware, where you can visit the Harrington Raceway and Casino or stroll the peaceful grounds of the Killens Pond State Park.

Route 4: The Skyline Scenic Drive (2.5 hours)

If you really want to take your time and see some jaw-dropping views, get off the beaten path and take the Skyline Scenic Drive. Take NJ-49 East through Port Elizabeth, then turn onto US-40 West towards Wilmington. Take Exit 109B onto DE-2 West, which offers stunning panoramic views of the Delaware River and Wilmington skyline. Follow signs to DE-72 South, which will take you through Brandywine Creek State Park and past spectacular views of the park's forests, meadows, and rocky streams. Merge onto DE-1 South to reach Dover. This drive takes about 2.5 hours, but you'll see some of the most scenic parts of Delaware.

Make sure to stop at the Hagley Museum and Library, where you can learn about the history of the DuPont family and see some of their original mansions.
