Road-Tripping from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Greenville, South Carolina

If you're planning a road trip from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Greenville, South Carolina, there are a few routes for you to consider. Whether you're trying to speed down the highways, or take a more scenic route that allows you to soak in the sights and local flavor, we've got you covered.

Route 1: I-65 South and I-20 East

This is the most direct route between Bowling Green and Greenville, and covers a total distance of 482 miles. The drive along this route takes about seven hours, depending on traffic conditions and how many stops you make. As you leave Bowling Green, you'll merge onto I-65 South, and follow it all the way down to Birmingham, Alabama. From Birmingham, get on I-20 East, and follow it to Greenville.

It's a speedy journey, but along the way, we recommend making a few scenic detours to break up the drive. Head to Birmingham's Civil Rights District for a history lesson, take a hike in the mountain scenery of Cheaha State Park, and grab a meal at Ms. B's Southern Kitchen in Eastaboga for true Southern comfort food.

Route 2: Blue Ridge Parkway

This scenic route covers a total of 603 miles, and will take about 12 hours to get from Bowling Green to Greenville. It's definitely slower going, but the views are well worth the extra time. Start on I-65 South, then take I-40 East to Asheville, North Carolina. From Asheville, take the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way south to Greenville.

It's a beautiful drive, but be prepared for slow-going speeds. There are tons of scenic overlooks and hikes to take advantage of along the way. We recommend checking out the waterfalls of Pisgah National Forest, touring the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, and taking a drive down the Tree-lined road in South Carolina.

Route 3: The Bourbon Trail

This route covers a total distance of 500 miles, and takes about ten hours to get from Bowling Green to Greenville. Follow I-65 South to Louisville, then take the Bourbon Trail through some of Kentucky's most charming small towns. From there, head southeast on I-75 to Knoxville, then turn onto I-40 East to Asheville, then make the same accommodations as Route 2.

Along the way, you can tour some of the most famous distilleries in Kentucky, and get a glimpse of the region's distilling traditions. We recommend stops at the historic Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, and the Jim Beam American Stillhouse in Clermont.
