Road Trip from Boston to Stonington

Are you ready for a road trip? If you're visiting the beautiful seaside town of Stonington, Connecticut from Boston, Massachusetts, you have a few travel options to choose from.

The Scenic Route

If you enjoy scenic drives, we recommend taking Route 1, which hugs the coastline for much of the way. This route covers about 100 miles and the journey should take around 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Along the way, you'll see charming seaside towns, beautiful beaches and rocky coastlines. You can make a pit stop at Mystic Seaport Museum, an interactive maritime museum that's fun for all ages.

The Highway Route

If you're looking for a quicker journey, take Interstate 95 South from Boston to Stonington. This route is the fastest, covering about 108 miles and taking around 2 hours, depending on traffic. However, this route bypasses much of the charming coastline scenery. You can make a stop in New London's Ocean Beach Park, a family-friendly beach with a boardwalk and a pool.

The Scenic Highway with a Stop

If you want a balance between a quick journey and scenic views, we recommend taking Route 2 and then switching to Route 184. This scenic route is approximately 110 miles and should take around 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Along Route 2, stop at the Gillette Castle State Park, an unusual castle built by actor William Gillette. The park offers scenic views of the Connecticut River. Then take Route 184, which passes through picturesque coastal towns on the way to Stonington.

The Coastal Route

If you want to take the scenic route and have more time to explore, consider taking Route 3, which covers approximately 110 miles and should take around 3 hours, depending on traffic. This coastal route takes you through beautiful towns like Plymouth and Newport, Rhode Island, where you can stop and check out the famous Newport mansions.

No matter which route you choose, the drive from Boston to Stonington is a beautiful one. Be sure to leave time to stop and explore along the way!
