The Classic Drive: I-95 South

This is the most straightforward and quickest route, but it offers little in terms of scenic views along the way. The distance on I-95 South is approximately 288 miles, and driving without stops would take around five hours.

We recommend making a pit stop in Mystic, Connecticut, about halfway through your trip. Mystic Seaport, a museum with tall ships and 19th-century buildings, is an excellent option to stretch your legs and learn something new.

The Coastal Route: Route 1

If you want to savor the best of coastal New England, Route 1 is the way to go. The distance between the two cities on this route is 335 miles, so prepare for an additional hour or two on top of the classic drive.

On Route 1, we recommend stopping by Salem, Massachusetts, to visit the Salem Witch Museum or tour the Essex National Heritage Area. An afternoon walk around scenic Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is also worth your time.

The Island Experience: New England to New York

If you are up for an adventure, and a ferry ride piques your interest, why not hop on board in Portland, Maine, and cross over to get to New York?

The journey will take approximately 10.5 hours, with a drive on the other side, but the views and short breaks on deck will make up for it. Plus, leaving the driving to someone else for a few hours can be refreshing.

Once you reach Long Island, we recommend exploring Montauk before driving the final two hours to New York City.
