Option 3: Southern Hospitality

If you’d rather avoid the mountains altogether and soak up some southern culture, consider taking a more southern route through New Mexico and Texas! Take I-84 E to Twin Falls, Idaho, and then head down US-93 S to Las Vegas, NV. From there, take I-40 E all the way through New Mexico and into Texas. When you hit Amarillo, switch onto I-27 S until you hit I-20 W, which will take you straight into El Paso. This route is about 1600 miles total, and it will take you approximately 26 hours of driving time with stops included.

Along this route, consider stopping in Santa Fe, NM to check out the city’s historic architecture and vibrant art scene, or spend an evening in Lubbock, TX to take in some local music and cuisine.
