Road Trip: Driving from Blacksburg to Milwaukee

Are you planning a road trip from Blacksburg, Virginia to Milwaukee, Wisconsin? The journey can be an incredible adventure if you plan it well. The distance between Blacksburg and Milwaukee is approximately 700 miles, and driving can take upwards of 12 hours!

But worry not, brave traveler! Here are some of the best routes you can take to minimize travel time, make the journey more comfortable, and even find some excellent attractions along the way.

Route 1: I-70 W and I-64 W

  • Total distance: 837 miles
  • Driving time: 13 hours 40 minutes

This is the longest of our suggested routes, but it's also the most scenic. You'll travel through the charming countryside of Virginia, then cut through Kentucky's bluegrass region as you follow the Ohio River. This route takes you through the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri too. You'll enjoy the scenic view offered by the Mississippi River and enjoy some fantastic stretches of road before finally arriving in Milwaukee.

Be sure to stop at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to learn about the history of America's iconic sports car!

Route 2: I-76 W and I-80 W

  • Total distance: 861 miles
  • Driving time: 13 hours 22 minutes

The northern route is flat and less scenic than the southern option. But it takes you along the famous Great Lakes, so the views can be a serene landmark. It takes you past some terrific cities like Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan. You'll also travel across the border into Canada, so make packing your passport a priority (if it's allowed in accordance with travel restrictions). You can stop and stretch your legs at the Henry Ford Museum in metro Detroit.

Route 3: I-94 W

  • Total distance: 811 miles
  • Driving time: 12 hours 45 minutes

This route is the quickest way to travel from Blacksburg to Milwaukee, but it's also less scenic than the other routes. The I-94 W route takes you through Indiana and should be considered a practical option, rather than a sightseeing adventure. However, the trip can be slowed by construction and traffic if you travel during peak periods. If this is your chosen travel path, you can stop in Michigan City, Indiana, to visit the Indiana Dunes National Park.

Tips for the Road

Whatever route you pick, be sure to take breaks to rest and relax. You could stop for a scenic view or take in some of the local tourism along the way. Stretch out and avoid driving if you feel fatigued. Always pack a reliable GPS and map, consider traffic flows, make all necessary vehicle checks, and take a first aid kit.

Driving from Blacksburg to Milwaukee requires persistence, patience, and some determination. But, with enough planning and an excellent driving spirit, your journey will indeed be a memorable one. Safe travels!
