Once you're in Iowa, drive to the Amana Colonies - a group of seven villages and a National Historic Landmark. For your last stop, visit the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, IA, before arriving at Iowa City.

Route 3: ND-46 E, US-281 S, and I-80 E

Distance: 1011 miles Driving Time: Approximately 15 hours 30 minutes

If you want to see more scenery and you're not in a rush, take this route. Head east on ND-46 E until you reach US-281 in Ashley, ND. Pass by some small towns and prairies on your way to South Dakota. Cross into South Dakota and stop by the world-famous Wall Drug before continuing south to Mitchell. From there, the route is the same as Route 2.
