Route 1: I-395 South

If you're in a hurry and prefer to stick to the highways, your best bet is to take I-495 South to I-395 South. This will take you directly from Bellingham to Preston in about an hour and a half. Along the way, you'll pass through some charming New England towns, but the highway doesn't offer much in the way of scenic views.

Route 2: Route 146 South to Route 44 East

For a slightly more interesting drive that still gets you to Preston in about the same amount of time, take Route 146 South until it intersects with Route 44 East. This will take you through some of the smaller towns in the area, and you'll get a better view of the countryside. There are some cute shops and cafes in the town of Putnam that are worth a stop.

For the most scenic drive of all, take the back roads from Bellingham to Preston. This will take you through some of the smallest, quaintest towns in the area, with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the architecture or grab a coffee at a local cafe. We recommend taking Route 140 down to Route 6, then following Route 6 East until you reach the border of Connecticut.
